What do kindness and books have in common? Both have the power to open minds, build empathy, and bring people together.

That’s the inspiration behind Peninsula Book Collaborative’s new Kindness & Books initiative – an uplifting community project launching this spring with the support of a $1,000 Kindness Grant.

Their goal? To engage over 1,000 people through acts of generosity and shared reading experiences that spark connection and compassion.

Here’s what the initiative includes:

  • 📖 School Partnerships – Hosting classroom read-alouds focused on kindness, followed by hands-on activities to bring the message to life. Every student gets to take home a free book, turning a moment of learning into something lasting.
  • 🎲 Kindness Bingo Challenge – A community-wide activity inviting kids, teens, and adults to complete kind acts in their neighborhoods. The reward? Books that inspire even more kindness.
  • 🎉 Celebration Event – The project wraps with a joyful gathering where participants can reflect, connect, and share their experiences.

This project stood out to us for so many reasons: its intergenerational reach, its creativity, and its deep belief that small, intentional actions can make a big difference. The Peninsula Book Collaborative beautifully embodies our Building Thriving Communities focus area, using storytelling to strengthen social ties and plant seeds of empathy.

We’re honored to support this work, and can’t wait to see the kindness it inspires across classrooms, neighborhoods, and book-filled shelves.
